# IndexNow

Does IndexNow influence visibility in AI?

**Impact:** Medium

**Influences:** Discovery & Crawling

**Proof:** Medium

**Consensus:** Mixed

## IndexNow explained

IndexNow is a protocol for notifying participating search engines when a site's URL is added, substantially updated, or deleted. A site submits the changed URL and proves ownership with a key file; participating engines can share the notification. The notification says **something changed**. It does not send the full page, compel a crawl, or guarantee indexing. [IndexNow's protocol documentation](https://www.indexnow.org/documentation) describes submission and key verification, while its [FAQ](https://www.indexnow.org/faq) explains the indexing limit.

## Impact details

**Impact: Medium, conditional on participating engines and timely content.** Prompt notifications may help an engine revisit a changed page sooner, so a new or corrected fact can reach its search index sooner. Bing connects IndexNow with fresher results in AI-powered search, including Copilot. The effect is likely most useful for fast-changing pages; a stable page gains little from repeated pings. The documented mechanism is notification and potential recrawling, **not a measured uplift in AI citations or recommendations**. [Bing's AI search guidance](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/July-2025/Keeping-Content-Discoverable-with-Sitemaps-in-AI-Powered-Search) and [IndexNow's FAQ](https://www.indexnow.org/faq) support these limits.

## Proof & consensus details

**Proof: Medium. Consensus: Mixed.** The protocol specifies what is sent and says an HTTP 200 confirms receipt only. IndexNow's FAQ states that each engine independently decides whether to crawl and index a submitted URL. Bing recommends IndexNow, but there is no controlled evidence here isolating its effect on AI answer citations. Consensus is mixed for **AI visibility across platforms** because the mechanism applies to participants, not every AI-search provider. [Protocol documentation](https://www.indexnow.org/documentation), [IndexNow FAQ](https://www.indexnow.org/faq), and the [current participant registry](https://www.indexnow.org/searchengines.json).

## Recommendation

First check whether your CMS, host, or plugin already submits changed URLs. If implementing it yourself, generate the required ownership key, publish the key file, and submit only URLs that were created, meaningfully updated, or deleted. Automate this from publication events, record responses, retry errors appropriately, and avoid resubmitting unchanged URLs. Keep ordinary internal links and sitemaps: notifications supplement discovery rather than replacing it.

## AI platforms

**Bing and Copilot:** Bing participates in IndexNow and recommends it to help changed URLs reach its search pipeline. Bing describes faster update discovery for AI-powered experiences, without promising that a submitted page will be cited. [Bing's guidance](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/July-2025/Keeping-Content-Discoverable-with-Sitemaps-in-AI-Powered-Search). The [participant registry](https://www.indexnow.org/searchengines.json) also names other receivers, including Yandex, Seznam, Naver, and Yep; it does not list Google or OpenAI. Therefore, there is no documented direct IndexNow submission path to

**Google AI Overviews/AI Mode** or **ChatGPT**. An indirect effect through another provider's index is possible but unverified here. Google's published AI feature guidance instead describes ordinary Search indexing as its eligibility path. ## Audit instructions

1. Check whether the site or CMS has an IndexNow integration and whether its ownership key file is reachable. A key file alone does not prove that URLs were submitted.
2. Publish or update one test URL, then inspect submission logs or Bing Webmaster Tools to confirm the exact URL was sent and accepted.
3. Check whether the URL was later crawled or indexed, and correct submission errors. Track AI citations separately; API acceptance only confirms receipt.
