Structured data accuracy and consistency explained

Accuracy means the structured data states true facts about the page's main subject. Consistency means those facts match what a visitor can see, as well as related feeds and current business records. A syntactically valid product offer can still be wrong if its price, currency, or availability differs from the product page. This factor concerns factual quality after markup is added; the separate Structured data factor concerns whether suitable markup exists at all. Impact details

Impact: Medium. Correct markup can clarify an entity or attribute; conflicting markup can instead provide a stale or misleading representation. Google tells site owners to make structured data match visible text for AI features and says markup should be representative of the main content. Bing similarly requires markup to reflect visible content and warns that misleading data may be ignored or harm eligibility and trust. This is a credible risk to interpretation and Search features. It is not evidence that fixing one field will cause an AI system to cite the page. Google's AI feature guidance, structured-data policies, and Bing Webmaster Guidelines.

Proof & consensus details

Proof: Medium. Consensus: Strong on the need for factual agreement. Google and Bing both publish explicit accuracy rules, and Google says product markup can improve its understanding of prices and shipping information. That documents a plausible processing benefit and a concrete compliance requirement. The evidence does not isolate a causal effect on AI citations, nor does a passing validator prove the claims are true. Google's policies say rich-result eligibility is not guaranteed even when markup is correct; a structured-data manual action can affect rich-result eligibility without automatically changing general Web Search ranking. Recommendation

Publish structured facts from the same maintained data source that renders the visible page. For each supported type, check that the entity, author, dates, ratings, offer, and availability really belong to the page and are current. Avoid copying a template's schema across unrelated pages. If product prices change often, update page text, JSON-LD, and any merchant feed together. Validate required formats, then perform a human comparison of the rendered page and markup; automated schema tests cannot judge truth. Correct stale or inconsistent values before adding more properties.

AI platforms

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode explicitly inherit the advice that structured data match visible text. Google's AI feature guidance

Bing and Copilot document the same accuracy principle for grounding. Bing Webmaster Guidelines

For ChatGPT, no public rule establishes how conflicting Schema.org facts are resolved. In all three cases, a trustworthy page also needs clear visible content: markup cannot repair a false statement in the body. Measure actual answers independently, because factual consistency is a prerequisite for reliable extraction, not a citation guarantee. OpenAI's publisher FAQ

Perplexity: The shopping announcement describes using current product details from integrations. Checking that supplied offer data agrees with the visible page is a practical consistency check; the announcement does not document how conflicts with Schema.org markup are resolved. Audit instructions

  1. Choose representative pages with structured data, especially pages with changing prices, dates, ratings, or availability.
  2. Compare each marked-up fact with the rendered page and current source records; note any missing, stale, contradictory, or page-irrelevant claims. Check data types with a validator.
  3. Correct the shared source or template, republish, and repeat the comparison. Keep a short list of the mismatches found and resolved; monitor Search features and AI mentions separately.
